Alternative Education Counselor

Job Summary:

Provide case management and individual therapy to behaviorally, mentally, and emotionally troubled students. Involve students’ families and the school district in the academic and treatment process. This is a school-year based position.


Essential Functions of the Position:

1. Maintain individual client charts.

2. Implement and co-facilitate therapeutic and educational activities.

3. Participate, observe, and document group dynamic interactions.

4. Work with Alternative Education staff team to ensure the safe implementation of the behavioral management program appropriate to the needs of the students.

5. Collaborate with team members (Behavior Support Staff, Teachers) ensuring the physical, emotional and medical needs of the clients are met.

6. Provide clinical consult to Alternative Education team.

7. Use safe crisis management techniques in all crisis situations.

8. Facilitate therapeutic group to the student or classroom

9. Maintain contact with the school district and family providing education and behavioral updates

10. Serve as a liaison between the student and community supports.


Professional Responsibilities:

1. Understand and fulfill job duties within the scope of the mission statement.

2. Adhere to the policies and procedures of the agency.

3. Maintain professional relationships with all agency personnel, school personnel,

students, families and outside agencies.

4. Meet with supervisor biweekly for one-on-one supervision to discuss

expectations and job duties.

5. Act as a positive role model to students by maintaining a professional demeanor

and ethical manner at all times

6. Fulfill training requirements as outlined in the Staff Development policy.


Required Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

1. Ability to multitask while maintaining a positive demeanor during periods of increased demands on time and attention from multiple sources.

2. Possess effective communication skills, both verbal and written. This includes the ability to interact with children and families of various socioeconomic backgrounds in a professional manner.

3. Superior knowledge of normal and abnormal child and adolescent behavior and the ability to apply that knowledge to provide valuable treatment planning and therapy to children and families.

4. Ability to plan, organize and lead individual and group activities.

5. Ability to de-escalate an emotionally charged or potentially violent situation using the least restrictive method possible.

Required Education, Experience, and Clearances:

1. Master’s Degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or related field required.

2. Individuals delivering counseling services must hold one of the following credentials and should have experience in providing services to students in the appropriate age range: certified school counselor, certified school psychologist, certified school social worker, certified drug and alcohol counselor (as appropriate), licensed social worker, licensed clinical social worker, licensed professional counselor, certified/licensed therapist, licensed psychologist or psychiatrist).

3. Experience working with behaviorally / mentally / emotionally unstable individuals.

3. Licensure eligible by maintaining continuing education requirements.

4. FBI, Child Abuse History, PA State Police, and Driver Clearances. Other clearances may be required dependent on residency status.

5. Experience working in a school setting preferred.

Physical Demands:

1. Lifting requirement of less than 20lbs on an occasional basis.

2. Ability to actively participate in recreational activities such as basketball, swimming, volleyball and walking.

3. Ability to perform a physical intervention which requires the strength to grasp, hold and maneuver a resident into various positions involving standing, sitting, kneeling and laying.


Salary | $41k - $45k per year
